The West Side Branch Library recently hosted their First Annual Black History Month Essay Contest.  The contest was open to all students grades 6-12 with a challenging theme of "What can I do to make a difference in my community?"  A local homeschooler, eleven year old, Jaylan Williams, won first place with his very pro-active speech sharing what he is already doing to make a difference in his community.   First, second, and third place winners were announced at the West Side's annual Black History Celebration held Saturday, February 27th. It was standing room only at the celebration with over 150 guests.  African Storyteller, Mrs. Ruth Spears, Tuskegee Airman, Walter Richardson, and the Greater Little Rock Baptist Church Youth Choir were on program and captured the attention of all ages present.  African prints and original art work were donated by local black art collectors and the Gumbo Art Gallery.  Mrs. Katherine Charles was the hostess of the educational and inspiring celebration while Friends of The Westside Library and Friends of The Pensacola Public Library offered assistance and volunteers to help make the celebration a huge success.
